What qualifies as an Islamic job?
UmmahBoard listing standards — what we include across all categories, what we decline, and how we review.
UmmahBoard is a curated Islamic dashboard, not a religious authority. We do not issue fatwas or certify that a role is halal for every individual circumstance. Instead, we apply consistent editorial standards so British Muslims can find listings that are relevant, genuine, and broadly aligned with Islamic values.
If a listing passes our review, it means we believe it belongs on UmmahBoard — not that every Muslim scholar would agree on every detail. You should always verify terms with the organisation before applying, donating, or booking.
What we mean by “Islamic job”
We use the label for roles that fall into one or more of the following categories. A single listing may qualify on multiple grounds.
Sharia-compliant sectors
Roles where the core business activity is structured to avoid riba (interest), gharar (excessive uncertainty), and haram industries. Common examples include Islamic banking and takaful, halal food production and certification, modest fashion, and ethical fintech built on Islamic finance principles.
Muslim-serving organisations
Employers whose primary mission is to serve Muslim communities — registered charities, mosques and madrasas, Muslim schools, community centres, and international NGOs with an Islamic ethos. The role itself may be general (finance, HR, IT) but the organisation's purpose is community-facing.
Ethical employers with Muslim-friendly workplaces
Organisations outside the Islamic sector that demonstrably accommodate Muslim staff — prayer facilities, halal catering, flexible hours during Ramadan, dress-code policies that allow hijab, and leave for Eid. We list these when the employer states this clearly in the posting.
Professional roles requiring Islamic knowledge
Positions where Islamic scholarship or sector expertise is essential — Sharia compliance officers, Islamic family law solicitors, chaplains, imams, and researchers in Islamic studies or Muslim civil society.
Grey areas
Some roles sit on a boundary. A compliance officer at a conventional bank's Islamic window may qualify where a general retail banking role would not. A teacher at a faith-neutral state school with strong Muslim pastoral support may qualify if the employer documents that support in the listing.
When in doubt, we ask: Is the role's primary activity or employer mission clearly connected to Islamic practice, Muslim communities, or halal industry? Is the posting honest about what the work involves? If we cannot answer yes, we decline or ask the submitter to clarify.
What we decline
These apply across all listing types on UmmahBoard.
- Roles whose primary function is in gambling, alcohol, conventional interest-based lending, adult entertainment, or weapons manufacturing
- Listings with no verifiable organisation, broken application links, or misleading salary or location details
- Multi-level marketing or commission-only schemes presented as employment
- Opportunities that charge applicants an upfront fee to apply or attend an interview
- Hajj or Umrah packages with no verifiable UK agent, pricing, or contact details
- Duplicate postings submitted repeatedly by the same organisation
Other opportunity types
“Islamic listing” on UmmahBoard covers employment and beyond. We apply similar principles across categories.

- Charities

- Education
- Courses, diplomas, Arabic, tajweed, Islamic finance certificates, and degree programmes — online or in-person.
- Halal Food
- Curated community picks and featured restaurants — not a full directory. Must be verifiably halal; we do not certify establishments ourselves.
How we review submissions
- We confirm the organisation exists and the application link works.
- We check that the title, location, value, and deadline match the source material.
- For jobs, we assess fit against the criteria above. For other types, we check relevance to British Muslims.
- We may contact the submitter for clarification before publishing.
Standard listings are reviewed within 48 hours. We reserve the right to remove or amend a listing if we receive credible information that it is inaccurate or no longer available.
Disagree with a listing?
If you believe a listing should not be on UmmahBoard, or that we have misclassified an opportunity, email us with the listing URL and a brief explanation. We review every report.
